Artist Statement

The color blue has a special place in my heart. Cyanotypes are one of the earliest forms of sun-print photography and, in my opinion, the most enchanting. Each image displays deep Prussian variations of rich blues that dance and swirl on paper, masking the hidden intent of the chemicals involved.
I wish they taught chemistry like this; I would have been hooked years ago. Cyanotypes use a solution of iron compounds that has remained largely unchanged over the years. Simple compounds react differently to different materials, papers, and temperatures. Once mixed with other household items, they create breathtaking variations. Puddles of blues, yellows, and white variations create a dream-like fantasy state that draws you in.

My inspiration comes from nature, which provides me with an incredible variety of botanicals, each with its own beauty and inspirational shapes and textures. By combining nature, process, and chance, I create beautiful results. Many of my ideas come from regular nature hikes that provide me with clarity and well-being. I take my time, drifting through the woods, gathering flowers, weeds, and prairie grasses.
Simply getting outside and looking at these little details asks us to take a moment, slow down, and look closer. Feathers are gathered one by one from my dear friend's farm, in appreciation for the roosters and hens that roam the land. It could be native prairie grass, lavender, or a feather captured by the chemical process and light. Cyanotypes ask us to pause and look closer at those everyday things differently and up close, capturing those finite little details.

Cyanotypes and mixed media are my chosen tools.
